夏休みの宿題 – Summer Homework in Japan

【English Translation】
For young kids in Japan, when you hear “summer vacation,” you might think of “playing”… but not, it meant “homework” for them (so nostalgic…) In the past, there was so much homework that on the last day of summer vacation, everyone cried and stayed up late to finish it. Sometimes we couldn’t even sleep…
When I was in elementary and junior high school, we usually had things like kanji drill books (writing lots of kanji), book reports (reading a book and writing an essay), independent research projects (choosing your own theme and investigating), and calligraphy assignments. (I never finished everything, so my family often helped me… thank you)
But recently I’ve heard that schools give much less homework! (Lucky kids~) A child in my neighborhood also said the same thing. The reason is to value family and community time, reduce stress for children, and also because online learning has become more common.
These days, summer vacation is not just about “homework,” but about “experiences.”
What kind of summer homework did you have?
