If you’ve studied Japanese for a while, you’ve probably seen the phrase “〜による” — maybe in the news, books, or JLPT materials.
It looks simple, but this little expression has several important meanings depending on the context!

1️⃣ Expressing Cause / Reason

When you want to say “because of” or “due to,” you can use “〜によって, 〜により or 〜による.”
This is common in news, reports, and formal writing.

🗞 Examples:

• 地震じしんによって建物たてものが壊こわれました。
  → The building was destroyed because of the earthquake.
• 台風たいふうによる被害ひがいが大おおきかったです。
  → The damage caused by the typhoon was great.

💡 Tip: This is more formal than saying 「〜で」 (e.g. 地震じしんで壊こわれた).

2️⃣ Expressing Means / Method

When something is done by means of or through, use “〜によって or 〜により.”

💬 Examples:

• インターネットによって世界せかいが変かわりました。
  → The world has changed through the Internet.
• この問題もんだいは話はなし合あいにより解決かいけつします。
  → This issue will be solved by discussion.

📝 によって is more common in speech, while により sounds more formal or written.

3️⃣ Expressing Agent (by someone)

Used in passive sentences, “〜によって” shows who or what did the action.

🧠 Examples:

• この本ほんは有名ゆうめいな作家さっかによって書かかれました。
  → This book was written by a famous author.
• 富士山ふじさんは多おおくの観光客かんこうきゃくによって訪おとずれられています。
  → Mt. Fuji is visited by many tourists.

4️⃣ Expressing Dependence / Variation

When the result depends on or varies according to something, we use “〜によって, 〜により or 〜による.”

• 人ひとによって考かんがえ方かたが違ちがいます。
  → Opinions depend on the person.
• 天気てんきによる計画けいかくの変更へんこうもあります。
  → The schedule might change depending on the weather.
