Did You Know? Powerful Ways to Say “Help” in Japanese

In English, “to help” covers many situations.

In Japanese, however, the word you choose changes depending on the nuance—how, why, and how seriously you are helping.

Let’s look at the most common ways Japanese people say “to help” and when to use each one naturally.

1️⃣ 手伝う(てつだう)– Helping with a task

手伝てつだう is used when you help someone do an activity or chore.

It’s the most common and casual “help.”

Nuance

  • Light, practical help
  • Helping do something together
  • Often used with work, housework, studying

Examples

  • 料理りょうりを手伝てつだいます。
  • → I help with cooking.
  • 引ひっ越こしを手伝てつだってくれますか?
  • → Can you help me move?
  • 宿題しゅくだいを手伝てつだいました。
  • → I helped with homework.

📝 Think of 手伝う = helping hands for a task.

2️⃣ 助ける(たすける)– Helping someone in trouble

助たすける is used when someone is in difficulty, danger, or serious need.

Nuance

  • Emotional or serious help
  • Helping a person, not just a task
  • Can be physical, emotional, or even life-saving

Examples

  • 友ともだちを助たすけました。
  • → I helped my friend (they were in trouble).
  • 困こまっている人ひとを助たすけます。
  • → Help people in need.
  • 彼かれは私わたしを本当ほんとうに助たすけてくれました。
  • → He truly helped me.

📝 助たすける feels heavier and more emotional than 手伝てつだう.

3️⃣ 手を貸す(てをかす)– Lending a hand (polite & indirect)

手てを貸かす literally means “to lend a hand.”

It sounds polite, gentle, and considerate.

Nuance

  • Offering help politely
  • Often used when you don’t want to sound pushy
  • Common in business or formal situations

Examples

  • よかったら手てを貸かしましょうか。
  • → Shall I give you a hand?
  • 少すこし手てを貸かしていただけますか。
  • → Could you help me a little?

📝 This is great when offering help respectfully.

4️⃣ 支える(ささえる)– Supporting someone

支える is used when you support someone long-term, emotionally or mentally.

Nuance

  • Emotional support
  • Standing by someone
  • Not about tasks

Examples

  • 家族かぞくが私わたしを支ささえてくれました。
  • → My family supported me.
  • 彼女かのじょは彼かれをずっと支ささえています。
  • → She has been supporting him.

📝 支える = support, not “help with doing.”

5️⃣ 世話をする(せわをする)– Taking care of someone

世話せわをする means helping by taking care of someone regularly.

Nuance

  • Caregiving
  • Looking after children, elderly, pets

Examples

  • 子こどもの世話せわをする。
  • → Take care of children.
  • 病気びょうきの人ひとの世話せわをする。
  • → Care for a sick person.
