Do you know? Japan is a country where earthquakes happen often.
Fifteen years ago today, on March 11, 2011, a very large earthquake occurred in Japan. It is called the 東日本大震災 (the Great East Japan Earthquake). The earthquake happened at 2:46:18 PM.
There was very strong shaking in the Tohoku region of Japan, and after that a huge tsunami came. In addition, after the earthquake, an accident occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Because of the radioactive contamination and other problems, it became a very large disaster.
The tsunami swept away towns, houses, and cars. Many people lost their homes, and their lives changed greatly. Many people died, and some are still missing today. Tsunamis are truly frightening.
At that time, I was a junior high school student. Even now, I clearly remember that moment. I was in class at school, and at first I felt a gentle swaying. At first, I thought the friend sitting behind me might be shaking my chair. When I turned around to talk to them, a big shake suddenly happened, and I realized, “Oh, it’s an earthquake.” Even in Nagoya, which is more than 800 kilometers away from the Tohoku region, we felt strong shaking.
After this earthquake, people in Japan began thinking more seriously about disaster preparedness. We realized how important it is to think about how to protect ourselves and our families during earthquakes, and to prepare things like food and water.
Every year on March 11, many people across Japan observe a moment of silence at 2:46 PM. They quietly pray for the people who lost their lives.
Even now, recovery efforts are still continuing in the affected areas. March 11 is also a day when people donate or think about what they can do to help.
The Great East Japan Earthquake is a very important event for Japan. We should never forget this day and continue to learn from it.
