More Different Practical Ways to Use 前 and 後 in Japanese
If you study Japanese for even a short time, you will quickly encounter the words 前(まえ) and 後(あと). At first, they may seem simple: 前 means “before” and 後 means “after.” However, in real Japanese, these two words appear in many different contexts.
Sometimes they refer to time, sometimes to physical position, and sometimes they even mean “ago.” Because of this, learners often feel confused when they see them used in different ways.
Let’s break down the most common uses so you can understand how Japanese speakers actually use 前 and 後 in everyday conversation.
1. 前 and 後 for Physical Position
One of the most basic meanings relates to space or position.
前(まえ) means in front, and 後ろ(うしろ) means behind.
Examples:
電車の前に人がいます。
(There is a person in front of the train.)
車の後ろに猫がいます。
(There is a cat behind the car.)
👉 Notice that when talking about physical position, Japanese usually uses 後ろ rather than just 後.
2. 前 and 後 for Time Order
Another very common use is talking about the order of events.
In this case:
前= before後= after
Examples:
ご飯の前に手を洗ってください。
(Please wash your hands before the meal.)
授業の後で先生に質問しました。
(I asked the teacher a question after the class.)
日本に来る前に、日本語を少し勉強しました。
(I studied a little Japanese before coming to Japan.)
ご飯を食べた後でコーヒーを飲みました。
(I drank coffee after eating.)
👉 When using nouns, attach の前/の後.
👉 When using verbs, use dictionary form + 前 and た-form + 後.
3. 前 Meaning “Ago”
Here is where things become interesting. When 前 follows a time expression, it means “ago.”
Examples:
三年前に日本に来ました。
(I came to Japan three years ago.)
五分前に電話しました。
(I called five minutes ago.)
👉 This structure is very common when talking about past events.
4. 後 Meaning “Later”
When 後 follows a time expression, it means “later” or “after.”
Examples:
三年後に大学を卒業します。
(I will graduate from university in three years.)
五分後に電車が来ます。
(The train will arrive in five minutes.)
So remember:
前 = ago
後 = later
5. 前 Can Also Mean “Previous”
Another meaning of 前 is previous or last.
Examples:
前の会社
(my previous company)
前のレッスン
(the previous lesson)
👉 This meaning is also very common in everyday conversation.
Quick Summary
前 and 後 may look simple, but they cover several important meanings.
前(まえ)
- in front
- before
- ago
- previous
後(あと・ご)
- after
- later
Final Tip for Learners
A useful way to remember this is to think about direction in time.
- 前 points backward in time → ago
- 後 points forward in time → later
Once you start noticing these patterns, 前 and 後 will feel much more natural in Japanese conversations!
