Tired of Japanese Learning Apps? Discover What Makes Dozo Different

Learning Japanese is exciting, but let’s be honest… it can also be overwhelming! 😅

You might use one app to memorize vocabulary, another to study kanji, a textbook for grammar, and YouTube videos for listening practice. Before you know it, you’re switching between so many resources that you don’t even know what to study next!

As Japanese teachers, we’ve seen many students struggle with exactly this problem.

That’s why we’re building Dozo, an all-in-one Japanese learning platform designed to help you study more effectively, stay motivated, and actually use Japanese in real conversations! 💜

But Dozo isn’t just another Japanese learning app. We’re building it based on our teaching experience and, most importantly, feedback from real Japanese learners.

Let’s take a look at what you can learn with Dozo and what makes it different!

📚 Everything You Need to Learn Japanese in One Place

One of our biggest goals with Dozo is to make self-study easier and more organized.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or preparing for the JLPT N1, Dozo provides learning materials for different levels and skills.

Here’s what you can study on Dozo:

  • Hiragana & Katakana: Learn Japanese characters with stroke-order animations, pronunciation audio, and quizzes.
  • Kanji: Study over 2,200 kanji, including their meanings, readings, and pronunciation.
  • Vocabulary: Learn thousands of Japanese words organized by JLPT level.
  • Grammar: Understand Japanese grammar from N5 to N1 with explanations and example sentences.
  • Reading: Practice reading Japanese stories with furigana, translations, and audio.
  • Listening: Improve your listening comprehension with conversations based on everyday situations.
  • JLPT Practice Tests: Test your knowledge with mock exams, explanations, and score tracking.

Instead of spending time searching for different learning resources, you can focus on what matters most: actually learning Japanese!

And we’re continuously adding new learning materials to make Dozo even more useful.

🧠 Remember Vocabulary Better with Spaced Repetition

Have you ever studied 20 new Japanese words, felt confident about them, and then forgotten almost everything a week later? 😭

This happens to many language learners!

Learning something once doesn’t mean you’ll remember it forever. That’s why reviewing what you’ve learned is just as important as learning something new.

Dozo uses a learning technique called spaced repetition.

Instead of reviewing every word at the same frequency, spaced repetition helps you review information at increasing intervals based on how well you remember it.

For example, a difficult word might appear more frequently, while a word you remember easily can be reviewed less often.

Dozo’s Smart Review system helps you review vocabulary, kanji, and grammar based on your learning progress.

This means you can spend more time on the things you struggle with and less time reviewing things you already know!

Our goal isn’t just to help you memorize Japanese for a test. We want you to remember what you’ve learned and be able to use it naturally. 💪

🎧 More Supporting Materials for Effective Self-Study

One thing we’ve learned from teaching Japanese is that simply understanding a grammar explanation isn’t always enough.

You need opportunities to see, hear, review, and use what you’ve learned in different contexts.

That’s why we’re focusing on creating plenty of supporting materials for self-study.

For example, when studying Japanese grammar, you can also practice recognizing it through reading and listening activities.

Dozo’s reading materials include furigana, translations, and audio, allowing you to practice multiple skills together.

Listening activities also focus on situations you might actually experience in Japan, such as ordering food, shopping, or asking for directions.

We want Dozo to be more than a collection of explanations. We want it to be a place where you can practice what you’ve learned until you feel comfortable using it.

And because everyone learns differently, we’re continuing to improve and expand these materials!

🗣️ Practice Speaking with Private Japanese Teachers

Here’s something we always tell our students:

Knowing Japanese and being able to speak Japanese are two different skills!

You might understand grammar perfectly when reading a textbook, but when someone suddenly asks you a question in Japanese, your mind goes blank.

Sound familiar? 😅

This is because speaking requires practice, not just knowledge.

With Dozo, you can book private lessons with Japanese teachers and practice what you’ve been studying on the platform.

For example, imagine you’ve just learned how to order food at a restaurant.

You can study the vocabulary, grammar, and listening materials on Dozo first. Then, during your private lesson, you can practice ordering food through a role-play with your teacher!

This makes your lesson time more meaningful because you can spend more time actually speaking instead of only learning explanations.

Your teacher can also help you with pronunciation, natural expressions, and mistakes you might not notice on your own.

We believe combining independent study with real conversation practice is one of the most effective ways to improve your Japanese.

🎭 Situation-Based Conversation Practice (Coming Soon!)

This is one of the features we’re especially excited about!

We’re currently developing activity-based and situation-based conversation practice to help learners become more comfortable speaking Japanese in real-life situations.

Why are we focusing on this?

Because real conversations don’t happen in neat textbook chapters!

When you visit Japan, you don’t get to choose which grammar point someone will use when speaking to you.

You need to understand the situation, think about what you want to say, and respond naturally.

For example, imagine practicing situations such as:

  • 🍜 Ordering food at a Japanese restaurant
  • 🛍️ Asking a shop assistant about a product
  • 🚉 Asking for directions at a train station
  • 🏥 Explaining your symptoms at a hospital
  • 👋 Introducing yourself and making new friends
  • 💼 Having conversations at a Japanese workplace

Rather than only memorizing individual sentences, the goal is to help you develop the ability to communicate in different situations.

We believe this type of practical conversation training can be one of the most powerful ways to build speaking confidence.

This feature is still being developed, but we’re excited to bring more opportunities for practical Japanese conversation into Dozo!

📅 Build a Japanese Study Habit That Actually Lasts

Many Japanese learners start with lots of motivation.

You study for two hours every day during the first week, buy a few textbooks, download some apps…

But after a few weeks, life gets busy, and studying Japanese slowly becomes less of a priority.

We’ve seen this happen to so many students!

That’s why Dozo isn’t only about providing learning materials. We also want to help you build a sustainable study habit.

Dozo includes features such as:

  • Personalized study plans: Organize your studies based on your level, goals, and available time.
  • Daily study streaks: Keep track of your consistency and build momentum.
  • Progress tracking: See how much you’ve learned and which skills need more attention.
  • Realistic learning goals: Focus on manageable steps instead of trying to learn everything at once.

You don’t necessarily need to study for hours every day to make progress.

Even 10–15 minutes of focused study can help you build consistency over time.

We want you to feel motivated by your progress rather than overwhelmed by everything you still need to learn. 🌱

💬 Your Opinions and Requests Actually Matter!

This is probably one of the most important things that makes Dozo different.

We’re not just building Dozo for Japanese learners. We’re building it together with Japanese learners! 💜

As Japanese teachers, we regularly communicate with students and hear about their struggles, goals, and frustrations.

Sometimes students tell us they wish they had more listening exercises. Others want better ways to review vocabulary or more opportunities to practice speaking.

We take these comments seriously!

Instead of deciding everything ourselves, we actively listen to feedback and use it to guide improvements and future features.

Of course, we can’t implement every request immediately, but we genuinely want to understand what learners need.

Dozo is still growing, and that’s something we’re excited about.

We want to create a learning platform that continues to improve based on real experiences, not just assumptions about what Japanese learners might want.

So if you have an idea, suggestion, or feature request, we’d love to hear it!

Your feedback could help shape the future of Dozo. 😊

🌸 Created by Japanese Teachers Who Understand Your Struggles

There are already many wonderful Japanese learning apps and websites available.

So why did we decide to build another one?

Because after teaching Japanese to students from different countries, levels, and backgrounds, we realized that many learners face similar challenges.

Some students know a lot of vocabulary but struggle to speak.

Others understand grammar but don’t know how to apply it.

And some simply feel lost because they don’t know what to study next.

We wanted to create a platform that addresses these challenges together.

Dozo combines structured self-study, vocabulary review, progress tracking, and access to real Japanese teachers.

Rather than focusing only on memorization or completing lessons, we want to help you develop Japanese skills you can actually use.

And since we’re Japanese teachers ourselves, we can bring what we learn from real lessons directly into the development of Dozo.

Our goal is simple: Make Japanese learning more practical, organized, and sustainable.
