How to Say “Convenient” in Japanese

Have you ever wanted to say that something is convenient in Japanese? Whether you’re talking about a useful app, a nearby convenience store, or Japan’s amazing public transportation system, there’s a Japanese word you’ll want to know!

Let’s learn some useful Japanese expressions and see how to use them in everyday situations!

1. 便利(べんり) — Convenient

便利(べんり) is the most common Japanese word for “convenient.” You can use it when something makes your life easier or helps you do something more efficiently.

Example sentences

このアプリは便利べんりです。→ This app is convenient.

駅えきの近ちかくに住すんでいるので、便利べんりです。→ I live near the station, so it’s convenient.

日本にほんの電車でんしゃはとても便利べんりです。→ Trains in Japan are very convenient.

Grammar tip: 便利(べんり)な or 便利(べんり)です?

便利(べんり) is a な-adjective.

When describing a noun, use 便利(べんり)な + noun.

  • 便利べんりなアプリ → a convenient app
  • 便利べんりな場所ばしょ → a convenient location
  • 便利べんりな道具どうぐ → a useful tool

When ending a sentence, use 便利(べんり)です.

  • このアプリは便利べんりです。→ This app is convenient.

2. 使いやすい(つかいやすい) — Easy to Use

Sometimes, “convenient” means that something is easy to use. In this case, 使いやすい(つかいやすい) may be a more natural choice.

使いやすい(つかいやすい) comes from 使う(つかう) (to use) + やすい (easy to do something).

Example sentences

このアプリは使つかいやすいです。→ This app is easy to use.

このパソコンは軽かるくて、使つかいやすいです。→ This computer is lightweight and easy to use.

このペンは使つかいやすいですね。→ This pen is easy to use, isn’t it?

💡 What’s the difference?

  • 便利(べんり) → convenient; useful in making something easier
  • 使いやすい(つかいやすい) → easy to use or operate

For example, an app can have many useful features and be 便利(べんり), but if the buttons are confusing, it might not be 使いやすい(つかいやすい)!

3. 都合がいい(つごうがいい) — Convenient for Someone / Suitable

When talking about schedules, meeting times, or arrangements, 都合がいい(つごうがいい) is often more natural than 便利(べんり).

It means that a time or situation works well for someone.

Example sentences

明日あしたの午後ごごは都合つごうがいいです。→ Tomorrow afternoon is convenient for me.

何時なんじが都合つごうがいいですか?→ What time is convenient for you?

土曜日どようびなら都合つごうがいいです。→ Saturday works for me.

💡 Remember: When asking someone about their availability, use 都合がいい(つごうがいい) rather than 便利(べんり).

For example, instead of saying 「何時(なんじ)が便利(べんり)ですか?」, it’s more natural to say 「何時(なんじ)が都合(つごう)がいいですか?」

4. 近くて便利(ちかくてべんり) — Conveniently Located

Want to describe a shop, station, or restaurant that’s nearby and easy to get to? You can use 近くて便利(ちかくてべんり).

Example sentences

コンビニが近ちかくて便利べんりです。→ The convenience store is nearby, which is convenient.

このホテルは駅えきに近ちかくて便利べんりです。→ This hotel is conveniently located near the station.

スーパーが家いえの近ちかくにあるので、便利べんりです。→ There’s a supermarket near my house, so it’s convenient.

This expression is especially useful when talking about where you live, places you visit, or your travel experiences in Japan.

5. 便利(べんり) vs. 役に立つ(やくにたつ)

Another expression worth learning is 役に立つ(やくにたつ), which means “to be useful” or “to be helpful.”

Although 便利(べんり) and 役に立つ(やくにたつ) can sometimes be used in similar situations, their meanings are a little different.

  • 便利(べんり) → convenient; makes something easier
  • 役に立つ(やくにたつ) → useful; helps you achieve something or solve a problem

Example sentences

この辞書じしょは便利べんりです。→ This dictionary is convenient.

この本ほんは日本語にほんごの勉強べんきょうに役やくに立たちます。→ This book is useful for studying Japanese.

このアプリは旅行りょこうに役やくに立たちます。→ This app is useful for traveling.

In everyday Japanese, you can also hear 役に立つ(やくにたつ) in the form 役に立ちます(やくにたちます).

6. Bonus: How to Say “Inconvenient” in Japanese

The opposite of 便利(べんり) is 不便(ふべん), which means “inconvenient.”

Example sentences

この町まちは駅えきから遠とおくて不便ふべんです。→ This town is far from the station, so it’s inconvenient.

車くるまがないと不便ふべんです。→ It’s inconvenient without a car.

You can remember the pair like this:
