How to Express “Can Do” in Japanese

Ever wondered how to say “I can eat sushi” or “I can speak Japanese” in Japanese?
Let’s dive into how to express ability using three key patterns: 〜れる, 〜られる, and できる. Each has a slightly different use, so by the end of this post, you’ll know how to express what you can (or can’t) do like a native!

1. る-Verbs → 〜られる

For る-verbs, replace the final る with られる to express “can do.”

食たべる (to eat)	食たべられる	寿司すしが食たべられます。 (I can eat sushi.)
見みる (to see)	見みられる	映画えいがが見みられます。 (I can watch the movie.)
起おきる (to get up)	起おきられる	早はやく起おきられます。 (I can wake up early.)
寝ねる (to sleep)	寝ねられる	このベッドで寝ねられます。 (I can sleep on this bed.)
信しんじる (to believe)	信しんじられる	それが信しんじられません。 (I can’t believe that.)
出でる (to go out)	出でられる	このドアから出でられます。 (You can go out from this door.)
降おりる (to get off)	降おりられる	次つぎの駅えきで降おりられますか？ (Can I get off at the next station?)
教おしえる (to teach)	教おしえられる	日本語にほんごが教おしえられます。 (I can teach Japanese.)
忘わすれる (to forget)	忘わすれられる	忘わすれられない思おもい出でです。 (It’s an unforgettable memory.)
借かりる (to borrow)	借かりられる	ペンが借かりられますか？ (Can I borrow a pen?)

In casual speech, られる often becomes just れる.
e.g. 食たべれる, 見みれる

2. う-Verbs → 〜れる

For う-verbs, the final う-sound changes to the え sound, and then you add る.

話はなす (to speak)	話はなせる	日本語にほんごが話はなせます。 (I can speak Japanese.)
書かく (to write)	書かける	漢字かんじが書かけません。 (I can’t write kanji.)

泳およぐ (to swim)	泳およげる	彼かれは泳およげます。 (He can swim.)
飲のむ (to drink)	飲のめる	お酒さけが飲のめません。 (I can’t drink alcohol.)
使つかう (to use)	使つかえる	このアプリが使つかえます。 (You can use this app.)
買かう (to buy)	買かえる	あそこで買かえますよ。 (You can buy it over there.)
歌うたう (to sing)	歌うたえる	彼女かのじょは歌うたが歌うたえます。 (She can sing.)
遊あそぶ (to play)	遊あそべる	公園こうえんで遊あそべます。 (You can play in the park.)
待まつ (to wait)	待まてる	少すこし待まてますか？ (Can you wait a moment?)

3. できる (Can do / be able to)

できる is used for expressing general ability or when using the noun + する form.

日本語にほんごの勉強べんきょうができる
(I can study Japanese.)

宿題しゅくだいができた！
(I was able to do my homework!) ← past tense

It’s also often used with する-verbs:

勉強べんきょうする (to study)	勉強べんきょうできる	一人ひとりでも勉強べんきょうできます。 (I can study even by myself.)
運動うんどうする (to exercise)	運動うんどうできる	朝早あさはやく運動うんどうできますか？ (Can you exercise early in the morning?)
予約よやくする (to reserve)	予約よやくできる	オンラインで予約よやくできます。 (I can make a reservation online.)
練習れんしゅうする (to practice)	練習れんしゅうできる	毎日まいにちピアノが練習れんしゅうできます。 (I can practice piano every day.)
説明せつめいする (to explain)	説明せつめいできる	日本語にほんごで説明せつめいできますか？ (Can you explain in Japanese?)
参加さんかする (to participate)	参加さんかできる	来週らいしゅうのイベントに参加さんかできます。 (I can participate in next week’s event.)
料理りょうりする (to cook)	料理りょうりできる	私わたしは和食わしょくが料理りょうりできます。 (I can cook Japanese food.)
運転うんてんする (to drive)	運転うんてんできる	国際免許こくさいめんきょで運転うんてんできます。 (I can drive with an international license.)

“できる” can sound more formal or abstract than “〜れる/〜られる,” depending on the context.

Bonus: Particle Tip – Use が!

When using these forms, especially to describe what you can do, use が instead of を.
