More Different Practical Ways to Use 前 and 後 in Japanese

If you study Japanese for even a short time, you will quickly encounter the words 前(まえ) and 後(あと). At first, they may seem simple: まえ means “before” and あと means “after.” However, in real Japanese, these two words appear in many different contexts.

Sometimes they refer to time, sometimes to physical position, and sometimes they even mean “ago.” Because of this, learners often feel confused when they see them used in different ways.

Let’s break down the most common uses so you can understand how Japanese speakers actually use まえ and あと in everyday conversation.

1. 前 and 後 for Physical Position

One of the most basic meanings relates to space or position.

前(まえ) means in front, and 後ろ(うしろ) means behind.

Examples:

電車でんしゃまえひとがいます。

(There is a person in front of the train.)

くるまうしろにねこがいます。

(There is a cat behind the car.)

👉 Notice that when talking about physical position, Japanese usually uses うしろ rather than just あと.

2. 前 and 後 for Time Order

Another very common use is talking about the order of events.

In this case:

まえ = before
あと = after

Examples:

はんまえあらってください。

(Please wash your hands before the meal.)

授業じゅぎょうあと先生せんせい質問しつもんしました。

(I asked the teacher a question after the class.)

日本にほんまえに、日本語にほんごすこ勉強べんきょうしました。

(I studied a little Japanese before coming to Japan.)

はんべたあとでコーヒーをみました。

(I drank coffee after eating.)

👉 When using nouns, attach まえ/のあと.
👉 When using verbs, use dictionary form + まえ and た-form + あと.

3. 前 Meaning “Ago”

Here is where things become interesting. When まえ follows a time expression, it means “ago.”

Examples:

三年前さんねんまえ日本にほんました。

(I came to Japan three years ago.)

五分前ごふんまえ電話でんわしました。

(I called five minutes ago.)

👉 This structure is very common when talking about past events.

4. 後 Meaning “Later”

When follows a time expression, it means “later” or “after.”

Examples:

三年後さんねんご大学だいがく卒業そつぎょうします。

(I will graduate from university in three years.)

五分後ごふんご電車でんしゃます。

(The train will arrive in five minutes.)

So remember:

まえ = ago
ご/あと = later

5. 前 Can Also Mean “Previous”

Another meaning of まえ is previous or last.

Examples:

まえ会社かいしゃ

(my previous company)

まえのレッスン

(the previous lesson)

👉 This meaning is also very common in everyday conversation.

Quick Summary

前 and 後 may look simple, but they cover several important meanings.

前(まえ)

  • in front
  • before
  • ago
  • previous

後(あと・ご)

  • after
  • later

Final Tip for Learners

A useful way to remember this is to think about direction in time.

  • points backward in time → ago
  • points forward in time → later

Once you start noticing these patterns, 前 and 後 will feel much more natural in Japanese conversations!
