Two Ways to List Things in Japanese: と vs や

When learning Japanese, one small but important detail is how to list multiple items. In English, we usually just use “and”, but in Japanese, there are two common ways: and . They look similar, but they have slightly different meanings and feelings. Let’s take a look!

1. Using

is the most direct way to connect nouns. It means “and” in the sense of listing everything completely.

👉 Examples:

  • りんご バナナ みかんをべました。
I ate apples, bananas, and mandarins.
  • 札幌さっぽろ 福岡ふくおかきました。
I went to Sapporo and Fukuoka. (Only these two cities.)
  • 田中たなかさん 山田やまださんにいました。
I met Mr. Tanaka and Mr. Yamada. (No one else.)

Here, the speaker makes it clear that these are all the items, places, or people.

So, と = a complete list.

2. Using

is softer and more flexible. It’s used when giving examples, but not listing everything. In English, it often translates as “and… things like that”.

👉 Examples:

  • りんご バナナをべました。
I ate apples, bananas, and things like that.
  • 札幌さっぽろ 福岡ふくおかきました。
I went to Sapporo, Fukuoka, and places like that. (Maybe other cities too.)
  • 田中たなかさん 山田やまださんにいました。
I met Mr. Tanaka, Mr. Yamada, and others too.

So, や = not a complete list, just examples.

3. Comparing the Two

  • → Exact, complete list
  • → Incomplete, just examples

👉 Compare:

  1. ビール ワインをみました。
= I drank beer and wine (only those two).
  2. ビール ワインをみました。
= I drank beer, wine, and maybe other drinks too.
  3. 京都きょうと 奈良ならきました。
= I went to Kyoto and Nara (just these two).
  4. 京都きょうと 奈良ならきました。
= I went to Kyoto, Nara, and other places too.

4. A Small Bonus: など

Sometimes, after , Japanese people add など (etc.).

👉 Examples:

  • ふく くつ などいました。
I bought clothes, shoes, and other things like that.
  • 音楽おんがく 映画えいが などきです。
I like music, movies, and other things like that.

✨ Quick Summary

  • Use when you want to list everything.
  • Use when you want to give examples (not the full list).
  • Add など if you want to emphasize “etc.”

With just this small difference, your Japanese will sound much more natural!
