It’s “Supootsu no hi (Sports Day)” today. It’s a national holiday in Japan celebrated on the second Monday of October. It was originally established to commemorate the opening of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and to promote physical fitness and healthy living among the citizens. Therefore, we typically have sports day called Undōkai (運動会) held in elementary school and Taiikusai (体育祭) held in junior high school / high school in October. Students participate in a variety of events such as long jump rope, tug-of-war and relay races. I do not do anything special for Sports Day, but I think it’s a good day to be conscious of promoting health. Health comes first!
