The Truth About Remote Work in Japan

【English Translation】
In Japan, the number of people working from home is gradually increasing. Especially after COVID, companies began to think about new ways of working. However, there are still not many people who work from home every day. In many companies, a “hybrid style” is common, where people work from home only 1 to 3 days a week and go to the office on the other days.
One of the good things about working from home is that there is no commute, so it is very comfortable. You don’t have to take the train every day, and people who commute by car don’t have to deal with traffic jams. Also, you can make better use of your time. You can use commuting time or break time for housework or things you enjoy.
However, there are also some challenges. For example, you have fewer chances to meet and talk with coworkers in person. It can be harder to communicate when you only use email or phone. Also, it can be difficult to separate work and rest. Switching between “on” and “off” can be a bit challenging.
When I was working at a university before, remote work started because of COVID. I had more free time, and I felt that this way of working suited me well. However, since I have a cat, it sometimes slept on my computer or documents, which made working a bit difficult. (It was cute though!)
Working from home is very convenient, but it is still a relatively new way of working in Japan. In the future, more flexible work styles may become common.
How about in your country? Is working from home common? What kind of work style do you prefer?
