Have you ever wanted to say “My teacher told me to study” or “My mom told me not to forget my umbrella” in Japanese?
In English, we use phrases like “told me to…” or “asked me to…” — in Japanese, we express this with ～ように言う.

🌸 1. What is ～ように言う?

～ように言う means “to tell (someone) to do something” or “to tell (someone) not to do something.”
It’s an indirect command — we’re not quoting exact words, but reporting what someone told us to do.

🧩 2. How to Form It

There are two main patterns:

✅ Affirmative (telling someone to do something):

Verb (dictionary form) + ように言う

Example:
先生は私にたくさん勉強するように言いました。
👉 The teacher told me to study a lot.

🚫 Negative (telling someone not to do something):

Verb (ない form) + ように言う

Example:
母は私に夜おそくまで起きないように言いました。
👉 My mom told me not to stay up late.

🗣️ 3. When You Tell Someone Something (～ように言いました)

You can also use this grammar to talk about what you told someone to do or not to do.
In that case, the subject changes to “I” (私), and you can say:

私は（人）に ～ように言いました。
→ “I told (someone) to…”

Examples:

• 私は弟に早く寝るように言いました。
  👉 I told my little brother to go to bed early.
• 私は友だちに宿題を忘れないように言いました。
  👉 I told my friend not to forget the homework.

💡 Just like before, use:

• Dictionary form for “to do”
• ない form for “not to do”

A: 先生は何と言いましたか。
B: 宿題を忘れないように言いました。
👉 The teacher said not to forget the homework.

A: お父さんは？
B: 早く帰るように言いました。
👉 My dad told me to come home early.

B: 私は弟にゲームをやめるように言いました。
👉 I told my little brother to stop playing games.

💡 5. “To ask someone to…” version

If the speaker is making a request, we can use ～ように頼む（たのむ） instead.

Example:
友だちは私にドアを閉めるように頼みました。
👉 My friend asked me to close the door.

💬 Note:
Be careful when using ～ように言う in this situation!
If you say ～ように言う, it can sometimes sound a bit strong or commanding, depending on the tone or relationship.
When you want to sound polite or softer, especially when you’re reporting a request, use ～ように頼む（たのむ） instead.

So:

• ～ように言う → told someone to do (neutral → can sound strict or commanding)
• ～ように頼む → asked someone to do (softer and more polite)

🧠 6. Common Mistakes

❌ 先生は私に勉強して言いました。
✅ 先生は私に勉強するように言いました。

Don’t forget — we can’t just connect て-form + 言う when reporting commands.
We need ように before 言う to make it indirect and natural.
