Unlock ~ほどの: The Essential N3 Japanese

In Japanese, ~ほどの is a useful expression to describe degree or intensity.
It is used to connect an action with a noun and means:

“so … that …”

“a … that is so …”

It sounds natural in everyday Japanese because it adds strong description and emotion.


Structure & Tip

Verb + ほどの + Noun

You use ~ほどの when you want to explain how extreme or strong something is before introducing a noun.

Think of it as:

  • “a level of …”
  • “so much … that it becomes …”

Tip:

When using ~ほどの, always imagine a noun coming after it.

If a noun fits naturally, your sentence will also sound natural.


Examples

わすれるほどのいそがしさでした。

He was so busy that he forgot things.

くほどの感動かんどうでした。

It was so touching that I cried.

べきれないほどのりょうがあります。

There is so much that I can’t finish it.

しんじられないほどの景色けしきでした。

It was a view so amazing it was hard to believe.

はらえないほどの値段ねだんです。

It’s a price so high I can’t afford it.

ねむれないほどのあつさです。

It’s heat so strong I can’t sleep.

Example Answers (many possible):

  1. たおれるほどのつかれでした。I was so tired I could collapse.
  2. あるけないほどのあめりました。It rained so hard that I couldn’t walk.
  3. みみいたくなるほどのおとでした。It was a sound so loud that my ears hurt.

Translation Practice

Translate into Japanese using ~ほどの.

  1. It was a movie so interesting that I forgot the time.

  2. There was food so much that I couldn’t eat it all.
