今度 vs 今回: The Powerful Difference You Must Know
Japanese has many words that look similar but carry different nuances.
A very common pair that learners often mix up is 今度(こんど) and 今回(こんかい).
Both relate to time, but they are not interchangeable.
Understanding the difference will instantly make your Japanese sound more natural.
今回(こんかい)– “This Time”
今回 refers to the current occasion or event that is happening now or just happened.
Think of it as:
- this time
- on this occasion
- for this event
It is often used in:
- presentations
- news
- formal writing
- business emails
- announcements
Examples
- 今回のテストは難しかったです。
- This time’s test was difficult.
- 今回の旅行はとても楽しかったです。
- This trip was very fun.
- 今回のプロジェクトについて説明します。
- I will explain this project.
Nuance: You are talking specifically about the current or most recent event.
今度(こんど)– “Next Time” / “Soon”
今度 is more flexible and casual.
It often means:
- next time
- sometime soon
- in the near future
But here’s the tricky part:
今度 does not always strictly mean “next.”
It can also mean “one of these days” depending on context.
Examples
- 今度一緒にご飯に行きましょう。
- Let’s go eat together next time / sometime soon.
- 今度日本に行きます。
- I’m going to Japan soon.
- 今度は気をつけます。
- I’ll be careful next time.
Nuance: Future-oriented, casual, and sometimes slightly vague.
