【English Translation】

Everyone, do you feel a little nervous when starting a conversation in Japanese?
Many people probably think, “What should I talk about…?”

At times like that, what’s important is small talk.

In Japanese, small talk is called “zatsudan” or “sekenbanashi”.
It’s not about difficult topics—it’s casual conversation about everyday things.
By making small talk, you can create a comfortable atmosphere and build good relationships.

Small talk is very simple.
For example, you can talk about the weather, food, or your weekend—anything is fine.
Japanese people often talk about the weather or seasons. I also talk about the weather quite often.

In Japan, instead of jumping into deep conversations right away, people usually start with small talk to create a relaxed atmosphere.

First, try starting with a simple phrase.
For example, expressions like “How are you?” or “How have you been?” are casual and commonly used with friends.

From there, talk about simple topics.
The key is to keep it easy and relatable.

There’s one more important point.
If you speak actively and ask follow-up questions to learn more, the conversation will continue more naturally.

Also, aizuchi (listener responses) are very important.
These are reactions to show you’re listening, like “Oh really?” or “I see.”
If you don’t react, the other person might think you’re not listening.

Conversation is like playing catch.
By speaking actively and asking the other person questions too, you can have a more natural conversation.

Small talk isn’t difficult.
More than speaking perfectly, the most important thing is the attitude of “Let’s try talking.”

Take it step by step, and try making small talk in Japanese.
