The Easy Way to Remember 探す vs 見つける
If you’ve been studying Japanese for a while, you’ve probably come across 探す(さがす) and 見つける(みつける).
Since both are related to “finding,” many learners use them interchangeably. However, they have very different meanings.
The good news? There’s an easy way to remember the difference!
The Easy Rule
Think of it like this:
探す(さがす) = Search 🔍
見つける(みつける) = Find ✅
In other words:
First you search, then you find.
探す(さがす) → 見つける(みつける)
Once you remember this sequence, you’ll rarely mix them up again.
探す = To Search or Look For
Use 探す(さがす) when you’re trying to find something.
The important point is that you haven’t found it yet.
Examples
🔑 カギを探しています。
I’m looking for my keys.
📱 新しいスマホを探しています。
I’m looking for a new smartphone.
🐶 犬を探しています。
I’m looking for my dog.
You’re still searching.
見つける = To Find
Use 見つける(みつける) when you’ve successfully found something.
The search is over.
Examples
🔑 カギを見つけました!
I found my keys!
📖 おもしろい本を見つけました。
I found an interesting book.
🍜 おいしいレストランを見つけました。
I found a great restaurant.
Mission accomplished!
A Real-Life Example
Imagine you’re about to leave the house.
You can’t find your wallet.
You say:
💬 財布を探しています。
I’m looking for my wallet.
A few minutes later, you notice it’s on the table.
Now you can say:
💬 財布を見つけました!
I found my wallet!
Notice how the verb changes depending on whether you’re still searching or you’ve already found it.
A Helpful Timeline
🔍 Searching…
財布を探しています。
I’m looking for my wallet.
⬇️
✅ Success!
財布を見つけました。
I found my wallet.
This is the easiest way to remember it:
探す(さがす) is the process.
見つける(みつける) is the result.
Common Mistake
Many learners say:
❌ カギを見つけています。
If you mean “I’m looking for my keys,” this sounds unnatural.
Instead, say:
✅ カギを探しています。
Then, after you find them:
✅ カギを見つけました!
Quick Comparison
| 探す(さがす) | 見つける(みつける) |
|---|---|
| To search / look for | To find |
| You’re still searching | You’ve already found it |
| The process | The result |
| Search | Success |
Remember This!
Whenever you’re unsure, ask yourself:
“Am I still searching?”
✔️ Yes → 探す(さがす)
“Have I already found it?”
✔️ Yes → 見つける(みつける)
It’s that simple!
Once you think of 探す(さがす) = Search and 見つける(みつける) = Find, you’ll naturally choose the correct verb every time.
