日本では、昔から大切な書類にはんこを押してきました。

たとえば、銀行で口座を作るときや、家を買うときなどに使われてきました。今でも使うことがありますが、最近はサインやオンラインで手続きができることも増えています💻

English Translation
Have you ever heard of “hanko,” Japanese name stamps? A hanko is a small tool with your name or another design engraved on it. When you press it onto paper with ink, it leaves your name or a mark. In Japan, there is a tradition of using hanko instead of signatures!
In Japan, people have used hanko on important documents for a long time. For example, they have traditionally been used when opening a bank account or buying a house. They are still used today, but recently, more procedures can be completed with signatures or online.
There are several types of hanko. A “mitomein” is a regular stamp used in everyday life. A “jitsuin” is an important stamp officially registered at a local government office. It is used for important procedures, such as buying a house.
Interestingly, Japan has specialty shops called “hankoya” that sell stamps! You can even have a personalized hanko made with your own name. You can also buy stamps with common Japanese family names at 100-yen shops!
Recently, stamps featuring cute animals and characters have also become popular. In Japan, “goshuin,” special seals collected at shrines and temples, are also well known!
Although Japan is becoming more digital, hanko are still an important part of Japanese culture. If you ever visit Japan, why not try making your own personalized hanko?
