Listing Reasons in Japanese : ~し、それに
When you want to list multiple reasons in Japanese, you’ll often use ~し or ~し、それに.
They are both handy, but they have slightly different uses and nuances. Let’s break it down!
1️⃣ What is ~し?
~し is used to list two or more reasons for something.
It often gives the feeling of “and also” / “and” when talking about reasons.
🔹 Pattern
Verb (plain form) + し
い-adjective + し
な-adjective + だし
Noun + だし
🔹 Example
このレストランは安いし、美味しいです。
This restaurant is cheap, and delicious.
Here, 安い (cheap) and 美味しい (delicious) are two reasons why the speaker likes the restaurant.
2️⃣ What is ~し、それに?
~し、それに is like ~し, but it adds extra emphasis on the final reason.
It’s like saying: “And what’s more…” or “Plus…”.
🔹 Pattern
Reason 1 + し、
Reason 2 + し、
それに + Extra strong reason
🔹 Example
このレストランは安いし、美味しいし、それに 景色もきれいです。
This restaurant is cheap, delicious, and the view is beautiful too.
Here, “景色もきれい” feels like a bonus point that makes the restaurant even more appealing.
