“I Got It” in Japanese: 8 Phrases You Need to Know

If you’ve been studying Japanese for a while, you’ve probably wanted to say “I got it!” But just like in English, there isn’t only one way to express this.

Depending on the situation, Japanese speakers choose different expressions. Some mean “I understand,” while others mean “Okay,” “I figured it out,” or “Leave it to me.”

Let’s look at the most common ways to say “I got it” in Japanese!

🌟わかりました – I understand

This is the most common and polite way to say “I got it.”
You use it when someone explains something or gives you instructions.

Example:

A: 明日あしたまでにレポートをしてください。

Please submit the report by tomorrow.

B: わかりました。

I understand.

This is safe to use with teachers, coworkers, customers, or anyone you want to speak politely to.

🌟わかった – Got it

This is the casual version of わかりました.
Use it with friends, family, or people close to you.

Example:

A: えきいたら連絡れんらくしてね。

Text me when you arrive at the station.

B: わかった!

Got it!

🌟 了解りょうかいです – Got it / Roger

了解(りょうかい)です is commonly used among coworkers or teammates. It sounds a little more direct than わかりました.

Example:

A: この資料しりょう午後ごごまでにおくってください。

Please send these documents by this afternoon.

B: 了解りょうかいです。

Got it.

Note

Although you’ll hear it often at work, many people avoid using 了解(りょうかい)です toward customers or someone much higher in status because it can sound less polite. In formal business situations, 承知(しょうち)しました that I’ll explain next is usually preferred.

🌟 承知しょうちしました – Certainly / Understood

This is a very polite business expression.
You’ll often hear it in customer service or professional workplaces.

Example:

A: 来週らいしゅうまでに準備じゅんびをおねがいします。

Please prepare it by next week.

B: 承知しょうちしました。

Certainly.

If you’re talking to your boss or a customer, this is an excellent choice.

🌟オッケー – Okay

Japanese also uses the English word “OK.”
It is very casual and common among friends.

Example:

A: 7時しちじえきおう!

Let’s meet at the station at 7!

B: オッケー!

Okay!

You’ll also hear OKです, which is slightly more polite.

🌟なるほど – I see

なるほど doesn’t simply mean “I understand.”
Instead, it expresses that something makes sense or that you’ve learned something new.

Example:

A: 日本にほんではくついでいえはいります。

In Japan, people take off their shoes before entering a house.

B: なるほど。

I see.

You wouldn’t usually use なるほど to accept someone’s request or instruction.

🌟把握はあくしました – I’ve got the situation

This expression literally means “I’ve grasped it.”
It often appears in workplaces when confirming information or understanding the overall situation.

Example:

A: プロジェクトの予定よていすこわりました。

The project schedule has changed a little.

B: 把握はあくしました。

I’ve got it.

This sounds professional but is less common in everyday conversation.

🌟まかせて – Leave it to me

Sometimes “I got it!” means “Don’t worry, I’ll handle it.”
In that case, Japanese often uses:

まかせて!

Example:

A: この荷物にもつはこべる?

Can you carry these bags?

B: まかせて!

I’ve got it! / Leave it to me!
This expression focuses on taking responsibility, not understanding.

Common Mistake

Many learners use なるほど after someone gives them an instruction.

明日あしたまでに提出ていしゅつしてください。

Please submit it by tomorrow.

❌ なるほど。

This sounds strange because なるほど means “I see” rather than “I’ll do it.”

Instead, say:

✅ わかりました。
承知しょうちしました。 (formal)

Which One Should You Use?

If you’re unsure, here’s a simple guide:

  • Use わかりました in most situations.
  • Use わかった with friends.
  • Use 承知(しょうち)しました in formal business situations.
  • Use なるほど when something suddenly makes sense.
  • Use 任(まか)せて! when you mean “Leave it to me!”

Mastering these small differences will make your Japanese sound much more natural!
