I see this news every single day… It says, “There’s no Japanese rice!” Well, there is a little at the supermarket, but it’s too expensive! Japanese people eat rice every day, so it really hurts the wallet.
Before (around 2023), 5 kg was about 2,200–2,400 yen, but now (2025) it’s around 3,800–4,800 yen! That’s way too expensive! It seems they’re importing U.S.-grown rice, but in reality many Japanese people prefer Japanese rice (sweat).
Why is there no rice? It sounds like there isn’t just one reason… First, the heat lowered the rice’s quality; second, some stores had rice while others had little; and third, people who were shocked by the news ended up buying a lot. (Is that really true? I’m not sure though)
When I went to the supermarket yesterday, there was a sign: “Only one bag of rice per person!” That’s what it means. I want to eat lots of rice again soon!
