Earthquake Country, Japan
In Japan, there are many small earthquakes every year. Sometimes, there are also large earthquakes. In particular, places like Tokyo, Shizuoka, Tohoku, and Kyushu have many earthquakes.
People living in Japan always prepare for earthquakes. Since we don’t know when an earthquake might happen, it’s a good idea to start preparing now.
When an earthquake happens, first, do not panic. While it is shaking, get under a table and protect your head. Stay away from windows and bookshelves. If you are outside, move away from tall buildings and go to a safe area.
When the shaking stops, turn off any fire or gas, open the door, and go outside. In many areas, there are evacuation sites. It’s a good idea to check the information about your area before an earthquake happens.
To feel more secure during an earthquake, it’s important to prepare some items at home, such as:
- Water (2 liters × 3 days’ worth)
- Canned food and instant noodles
- Flashlight
- Radio
- Mobile battery
- Portable toilet
- Cash
- Shoes (because there might be broken glass on the ground)
- Medicine and masks
Many communities also hold earthquake drills or simulation events from time to time. Please check if there are any in your area!
