【English Translation】
Do you remember COVID that happened in 2020?
You can’t forget it, right?
There was a time when people all over the world had to wear masks.
Among them, Japan was actually the country that wore masks for the longest time in the world!
In fact, even before COVID, there has been a culture of wearing masks in Japan.
So why do Japanese people wear masks?
There are several reasons.
The biggest reason is to avoid spreading colds or the flu to other people.
In Japan, people care a lot about “not causing trouble to others,” so even if they feel a little sick, they wear a mask.
And more than that, in Japan, many people feel safe when they hide their face with a mask.
Some people wear masks on days when they don’t want to show their bare face, or when they don’t want to be seen by others too much.
In crowded places, some people feel more relaxed because they don’t worry about other people’s eyes.
Especially among students, many people wear masks all the time during winter.
Of course, one reason is that it’s cold, but looking back now, maybe it was because during adolescence, they wanted to hide themselves from others somehow (that was my experience).
