Japanese Grammar Made Easy: When to Use 時 vs 時間

Have you ever wondered why 7時 (しちじ) and 7時間 (しちじかん) look so similar but mean completely different things?

The answer is simple: 時 (じ) tells you what time it is, while 時間 (じかん) tells you how long something lasts.

Let’s break it down!

O’Clock (A Specific Time)

When 時 (じ) is attached to a number, it means “o’clock.” It tells you the exact time on the clock.

Examples

It’s 7 o’clock now.

School starts at 8 o’clock.

I eat dinner at 6 o’clock.

💡 Think of 時 (じ) as “What time?”

Hours (Duration)

時間 (じかん) tells you how many hours something takes or lasts.

Examples

I studied for two hours.

This movie is two hours long.

It takes about two hours to get from Tokyo to Nagoya by Shinkansen.

💡 Think of 時間 (じかん) as “How long?”

Compare the Difference

🕖 7 o’clock

We’re meeting at 7 o’clock.

7時間

7 hours

I worked for seven hours.

Notice how adding 間 (かん) changes the meaning from a specific time to a length of time.

A Helpful Trick

Ask yourself this question:

👉 Are you talking about a clock?

Use

I go to bed at 9 o’clock.

👉 Are you talking about a duration?

Use

I slept for nine hours.

Common Mistakes

This means “I studied at 2 o’clock,” not “I studied for two hours.”

I studied for two hours.

This means “Let’s meet in eight hours” only in a very unnatural way and is not what learners usually intend.

If you want to say “Let’s meet at 8 o’clock,” say:

✅ 8いましょう。
Let’s meet at 8 o’clock.

Remember This!

It’s easy to remember:

Once you understand this difference, you’ll be able to talk about schedules, appointments, work, study, and daily life much more naturally.
