In Japan, people have said for a long time that there are mysterious creatures called yokai. Yokai are similar to ghosts or monsters, but they are not all evil. Some yokai help people, while others like to play tricks. Long ago, when something happened that people could not explain, they often thought, “Maybe it’s because of a yokai.”
One famous yokai is the Kappa. Kappa live in rivers and ponds and have a dish-shaped spot on top of their heads. It is said that if the water in that dish disappears, they become weak. Another famous yokai is the Tengu. Tengu live in the mountains and have long noses. In the past, when people got lost in the mountains, they believed it was because of a Tengu’s trick.
There is also a yokai called Zashiki-warashi in Japan. It looks like a child, and it is said that if it lives in your house, it brings good luck. Because it is considered a good yokai, many people would like to meet one. But for me, they’re still a little scary, so I’d rather not see one!
Even today, yokai often appear in Japanese anime, games, and books. Although they come from old stories, they still have a big influence on modern Japanese culture. I think more of my students have become interested in yokai recently. It also looks like there is a website called “Yokai.com.” If you’re interested, be sure to check it out!
