How to Say “Before/After Doing Something”
If you’re learning Japanese, one of the most useful grammar patterns you’ll encounter is how to talk about doing things before or after something else. In English, we say “before eating” or “after studying.” In Japanese, we use:
- 〜前に → before doing something
- 〜後で → after doing something
Let’s take a closer look at how each works and how to use them naturally.
1. ~前に (Before Doing Something)
Structure:
[Verb (dictionary form)] + 前に
This means “before doing [something]”.
Examples:
- 食べる前に、手を洗います。
→ I wash my hands before eating. - 出かける前に、天気をチェックします。
→ I check the weather before going out.
📝 Note: Use the dictionary form of the verb before 前に.
2. ~後で (After Doing Something)
Structure:
[Verb (ta-form)] + 後で
This means “after doing [something]”.
Examples:
- 食べた後で、歯をみがきます。
→ I brush my teeth after eating. - 勉強した後で、ゲームをします。
→ I play games after studying.
📝 Note: Use the ta-form of the verb before 後で.
🔁 Comparison:
English | Japanese |
---|---|
Before eating | 食べる前に |
After eating | 食べた後で |
Before going home | 家に帰る前に |
After going home | 家に帰った後で |
👀 Quick Tips:
- You can also use nouns before 前に and 後で:
- 会議の前に → before the meeting
- 映画の後で → after the movie
- You might hear ~後 instead of ~後で in casual speech or writing.
- Example: 勉強した後、ゲームをした。 (after studying, I played games)
