How to Take a Bus in Japan

Hello, NanaFam! Today, I will explain how to take a bus in Japan. In Japan, there are two types of buses:

  1. Buses where you enter through the front door
  2. Buses where you enter through the back door

Let’s take a look at how to ride each one!

① Buses You Enter from the Front

For this type of bus, you pay first when you get on.

How to ride:
1️⃣ Enter through the front door.
2️⃣ Pay the fare at the fare box near the driver OR tap your Suica card.
3️⃣ Find a seat or stand.
4️⃣ When you want to get off, press the stop button.
5️⃣ Exit through the back door.

② Buses You Enter from the Back

For this type of bus, you pay when you get off.

How to ride:
1️⃣ Enter through the back door.
2️⃣ Take a numbered ticket from the machine (if using cash). If using Suica, just tap the card when boarding.
3️⃣ Find a seat or stand.
4️⃣ When you get off, pay near the driver.

  • If paying with cash: Check the fare on the electronic display and put the money in the fare box.
  • If using Suica: Simply tap your card!
5️⃣ Exit through the front door.

Tips for Taking the Bus

✅ No change is given, so prepare small coins in advance!
