Golden Week is one of Japan’s biggest holiday seasons. Many people spend this time traveling, relaxing, and enjoying time with family and friends. However, after Golden Week ends, some people start to feel things like:
“I don’t want to go to school or work…”
“I don’t feel like doing anything…”
In Japan, these feelings are called “May Blue.”
So, why does May Blue happen?
First, Golden Week is a long holiday, so many people spend their days relaxing. They sleep a lot, enjoy their hobbies, and take a break from their usual busy lives. But once the holiday ends, they have to wake up early again and return to school or work. This sudden change in lifestyle can make people feel tired and unmotivated.
Also, in Japan, new schools and jobs usually begin in April. People start new classes, meet new teachers, or begin working at a new company. During April, many people try very hard while feeling nervous and stressed. Some people also struggle to adjust to their new environment.
Then, after relaxing during Golden Week, all of that stress and exhaustion can suddenly catch up with them.
When fun times come to an end, people can also feel lonely or sad. Some begin thinking, “Now I have to go back to my busy daily life again…” and lose motivation.
If you feel May Blue, these things may help:
• Get enough sleep
• Eat good food
• Go for a walk
• Listen to your favorite music
• Don’t push yourself too hard
It’s important to slowly return to your normal routine.
May Blue is not a special or unusual illness. After Golden Week, many people in Japan feel tired or unmotivated. It’s a very common topic every May.
So if you experience May Blue too, don’t worry too much. Take care of yourself, and try to move forward little by little.
