When you want to say “heart” in Japanese, you might think there is just one word. But Japanese uses several different words depending on what kind of “heart” you mean.

Here are four useful words to know!

❤️ 心（こころ）— Heart / Mind / Feelings

心（こころ） is one of the most common words for “heart” when talking about feelings, emotions, thoughts, or the inner self.

It usually does not mean the physical organ.

• 心こころが痛いたい。
  My heart hurts. / I’m emotionally hurt.

• 心こころが優やさしい人ひとです。
  They are a kind-hearted person.

• 心こころからありがとう。
  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

💓 心臓（しんぞう）— Heart (the Organ)

心臓（しんぞう） means the physical heart inside your body.

• 心臓しんぞうがドキドキしています。
  My heart is pounding.

• 心臓しんぞうは体からだに血液けつえきを送おくります。
  The heart sends blood around the body.

👉 If you are talking about the physical organ, use 心臓（しんぞう） rather than 心（こころ）.

💘 胸（むね）— Chest / Breast / Heart

胸（むね） literally means chest or breast, but it is also commonly used in expressions about emotions and feelings.

Japanese sometimes uses 胸（むね） where English might use “heart.”

• 胸むねが痛いたい。
  My heart hurts. / I feel heartbroken.

• 胸むねがいっぱいです。
  My heart is full. / I’m filled with emotion.

• 胸むねに残のこる。
  To stay in one’s heart / leave a lasting impression.

💡 心（こころ） and 胸（むね） can both be used when talking about emotions, but the imagery is slightly different. 心（こころ） focuses more on your inner feelings or mind, while 胸（むね） often evokes emotions that you feel in your chest.

💕 ハート — Heart / Heart Shape

ハート is the Japanese loanword from English “heart.”

It is often used for the ♥ heart symbol or heart shape, especially in fashion, designs, emojis, and casual conversation.

• ハートの形かたちがかわいい！
  The heart shape is cute!

• ハートの絵文字えもじを送おくった💕
  I sent a heart emoji.

🌸 心（こころ） vs. 胸（むね）

These two words can be confusing!

心（こころ）

→ inner heart / mind / emotional self

• 心こころが強つよい人ひと
  → a person with a strong heart / strong spirit

胸（むね）

→ chest, but also the place where emotions are felt

• 胸むねがいっぱいになる
  → to be filled with emotion
