There was some very cute news from Minami Chita Beach Land in Aichi Prefecture.

On February 6, 2026, two baby Asian small-clawed otters were born. Both are healthy baby boys. Their mother is Lorraine, and their father is Asari. The babies are growing up well and getting bigger every day.

The aquarium held a naming contest for the babies. Many people submitted suggestions, and the winning names were chosen from 705 entries.

The names are:

Hinoki
Sawara

These names were inspired by February 6, the day the babies were born, which is known in Japan as “Bath Day” (Ofuro no Hi). Hinoki and Sawara are both types of wood that are often used to make traditional Japanese baths. They are very Japanese and meaningful names.

Currently, Hinoki and Sawara spend their days swimming in the pool with their family and playing with their keepers.
