In Japan, many different regions hold summer festivals during the summer. Summer festivals are filled with food stalls (屋台), where you can buy delicious food and drinks. It’s also fun to walk around while eating with your friends or family. Today, let’s take a look at five popular foods you’ll find at Japanese summer festivals!

First up is takoyaki! Takoyaki is one of the classic summer festival foods. They’re round balls made with batter and filled with octopus. They’re topped with sauce, mayonnaise, and bonito flakes. Freshly made takoyaki are hot and incredibly delicious!

Next is grilled squid (ikayaki). The squid is grilled and brushed with a savory sauce. As you walk past the food stalls, you’ll smell its delicious aroma. It’s tender, tasty, and one of the most popular foods at summer festivals.

Then there’s tamasen! It’s short for tamago senbei (“egg rice cracker”). Tamasen is made by sandwiching a fried egg between two crispy shrimp crackers. It’s usually topped with sauce and mayonnaise. The crispy crackers and soft egg go perfectly together, making it especially popular with children.

Of course, there are sweet treats too! One of them is candied apples (ringo ame). A whole apple is coated in a shiny layer of hard candy. They’re bright red, glossy, and beautiful to look at. They’re sweet, delicious, and one of the treats many people look forward to eating at summer festivals.

Last but not least is chocolate banana! It’s a banana coated in chocolate, often decorated with colorful sprinkles. It’s especially popular with children and is one of the foods that really makes you feel like you’re at a Japanese summer festival.
