ところ vs 場所: How to Use “Place” Correctly in Japanese
Both ところ and 場所(ばしょ) can mean “place” in English.
So, what’s the difference?
The key is that ところ is more flexible and can refer to a place, point, part, or situation, while 場所(ばしょ) specifically focuses on a physical location or space.
① ところ
ところ can mean place, but it has a much broader range of meanings.
It is often used when talking about a particular point, part, or situation.
📍 A particular place
ここは私の好きなところです。
→ This is my favorite place.
💡 “Part” or “aspect”
彼のいいところは、優しいところです。
→ His good point is that he is kind.
Here, ところ means something like “point” or “aspect.”
📝 “Situation”
ちょうど今、勉強しているところです。
→ I’m right in the middle of studying.
In this grammar pattern, 〜ているところ describes what is happening right now.
So, ところ is much more than just “place”!
② 場所(ばしょ)
場所(ばしょ) specifically refers to a place, location, or space.
It is commonly used when you want to identify where something is located or where something happens.
駅の場所を教えてください。
→ Please tell me where the station is.
ここは静かな場所です。
→ This is a quiet place.
会議の場所はどこですか?
→ Where is the meeting location?
場所(ばしょ) sounds more specific and objective when talking about a physical location.
ところ vs 場所(ばしょ)
| ところ | 場所(ばしょ) | |
|---|---|---|
| Basic meaning | place / point / part | place / location |
| Physical location | ✓ | ✓ |
| Part / aspect | ✓ | ✗ |
| Situation | ✓ | ✗ |
| Time/grammar expressions | ✓ | ✗ |
| Specific physical location | ✓ | ✓ |
| Range of meaning | Broader | More specific |
🔍 Compare these two:
駅のところ
This can sound like “the area/spot around the station” or “the place where the station is,” depending on context.
駅の場所
This clearly means “the station’s location.”
駅の場所を教えてください。
→ Please tell me where the station is.
So when you specifically want to ask about the location of something, 場所(ばしょ) is often the clearer choice.
⚠️ But sometimes both work!
For example:
好きなところ
→ favorite place / favorite part / favorite thing about something
好きな場所
→ favorite place / favorite location
The meaning changes slightly depending on context.
🏞️ Physical place
私の好きな場所は公園です。
→ My favorite place is the park.
Here, 場所(ばしょ) clearly refers to a physical location.
💕 Favorite aspect
この店の好きなところは、店員さんが親切なところです。
→ What I like about this restaurant is that the staff are friendly.
Here, ところ means “aspect” or “thing I like about it.”
You cannot replace it with 場所(ばしょ) here.
⭐ Quick Tip
Think of it this way:
場所(ばしょ) = WHERE? 📍
A physical location or space.
ところ = WHERE + WHAT POINT/PART/SITUATION? 💡
A place, point, part, or situation.
So remember:
場所(ばしょ) is more specific.
ところ has a wider range of meanings.
