Why Japanese People Still Love These Nostalgic Dagashi Snacks

English Translation
In Japan, there are cheap and small snacks called “dagashi.” Dagashi have been popular with children for a long time. Many of them cost around 10 to 100 yen each, so even children can buy them with their own money.
A small shop that sells dagashi is called a “dagashiya.” In the past, there were many dagashiya near schools and around town. Often, kind grandmothers and grandfathers were the owners of these shops.
After school, children would go to the dagashiya with their friends. It was fun to think, “What should we buy?” with just a little money.
There are many different kinds of dagashi. There are chocolate, gum, ramune candy, rice crackers, snacks, and more. They are not only sweet. Some are salty, and some are a little spicy.
Some snacks come with small toys, and some have a lottery or prize game. If you get a winning one, you may even receive another snack. It feels nostalgic.
Today, there are fewer dagashiya than in the past. However, you can still buy dagashi at supermarkets and convenience stores.
Dagashi are an important part of Japanese snack culture because they can bring back memories of buying snacks with friends and having fun as a child. Children can also learn how to use and manage money through buying dagashi.
